Judicial departments of Montecristi, Puerto Plata and Santiago show progress in reducing judicial delays and access to justice   

About the Judiciary

The judicial departments of Montecristi, Puerto Plata and Santiago presented this Friday the progress of their courts in the reduction of delays, accessibility to justice and the application of technology in their different courtrooms, within the framework of the construction of the ten-year strategic plan of the Judicial Branch. 

The event, headed by the presiding judge of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Henry Molina, and which took place in Santiago de los Caballeros, was attended by judges (zas), representatives of the legal community and different sectors of society from these provinces. 

The data presented shows that in the Judicial Department of Montecristi 79% of its courtrooms are up to date, with 98.64% of judicial matters resolved as of October of this year.  

Likewise, the courts of the Judicial Department of Puerto Plata are 74% free of judicial delinquency, with a resolution capacity of 99.46% of their judicial demands in the same period. 

Meanwhile, the Judicial Department of Santiago reflected that 57% of its courts are free of judicial delays and had a resolution rate of 93.83%. 

In terms of access and technology, the three departments have 13 rooms equipped with the Digital Access platform, through which online procedures can be carried out without the need to travel to the courts.  

Similarly, Santiago has three hearing rooms with audio transcription, and Puerto Plata has two. 

These departments have 47 chambers equipped with the Criminal Case Management System, which is a technological infrastructure that allows them to know online the cases assigned to each judge, as well as to automate multiple court tasks.  

It was also reported that of the 11 Mediation Centers that the Judicial Branch has nationwide, four are in the Cibao Norte region, and in Santiago alone, 721 agreements have been reached between the parties, without the need to go to trial, and 7,500 people have been assisted. 

About the Regional Meeting 

During his speech, with the theme "Vision of the Justice of the Future", Magistrate Henry Molina valued the participation and commitment of all, in identifying the challenges that "we will face in the next ten years to follow the path towards an up-to-date justice system to guarantee the dignity of the people". 

He indicated that this Ten-Year Plan is a crucial effort not only for the Judicial Branch, but also for the strengthening of democracy and the rule of law. 

The welcoming remarks were made by Judge Juan Aníbal Rodríguez, coordinating judge and president of the Court of Appeals for Children and Adolescents of Santiago, who thanked the efforts of each of the collaborators of this Judicial Department for the services and achievements that it exhibits today. 

On her side, Ana María Díaz, UNDP resident representative, highlighted that since 2019 this international organization has been accompanying the Judiciary in its efforts to strengthen and transform the institutional paradigm for an accessible and inclusive justice for the entire population.
