Pursuant to Article 154 of the Constitution of the Republic, the Supreme Court of Justice, without prejudice to the other powers conferred by law, is exclusively responsible for the following:
- To hear in sole instance criminal cases brought against the President and Vice President of the Republic; senators, deputies; judges of the Supreme Court of Justice, of the Constitutional Court; ministers and vice ministers; Attorney General of the Republic, judges and attorneys general of the courts of appeal or equivalent; judges of the superior courts of land, of the superior administrative courts and of the Superior Electoral Court; the Ombudsman; members of the Diplomatic Corps and heads of missions accredited abroad; members of the Central Electoral Board, of the Chamber of Accounts and of the Monetary Board;
- To hear cassation appeals in accordance with the law;
- To hear, as a last resort, cases whose first instance hearing is within the jurisdiction of the Courts of Appeal and their equivalents;
- To appoint, in accordance with the Judicial Career Law, the judges of the courts of appeal or their equivalents, of the courts of first instance or their equivalents, the investigating judges, the justices of the peace and their alternates, the judges of any other courts of the Judicial Branch created by the Constitution and the laws.
