"The Supreme Court of Justice is the highest jurisdictional body of all judicial bodies. It is currently composed of 17 judges and divided into three chambers in accordance with the Law. The Dominican Constitution in its Article 154 assigns it four essential attributions: 1) the hearing of criminal cases in privileged jurisdiction; 2) the hearing in last instance of the cases whose hearing in first instance is the competence of the Courts of Appeal and their equivalents; 3) the hearing of cassation appeals in accordance with the law; and 4) the appointment of the judges of the Courts of Appeal, Courts of First Instance and Justices of the Peace and their equivalents".
