Work progresses on the drafting of the Dominican Legal Dictionary (DJD)

About the Judiciary

The Escuela Nacional de la Judicatura (ENJ), the Academia Dominicana de la Lengua and the Fundación Guzmán Ariza Pro Academia Dominicana de la Lengua began work in January of this year on the drafting of the Dominican Legal Dictionary (Diccionario jurídico dominicano). Dominican Legal Dictionary (DJD), a joint effort that seeks to define all the terms of the Dominican Republic's legal system in order to contribute to a better understanding of its legal lexicon and the dissemination of the country's legal culture.

More than sixty Dominican jurists are collaborating in the preparation of the DJD under the direction of Fabio J. Guzmán Ariza, lawyer, member of the Dominican Academy of Language and corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy. The project has the technical assistance of María José Rincón, PhD in lexicography, and the coordination of the National School of the Judiciary in the persons of its director, Dr. Dariel Suárez Adames, and Ninoska Pichardo, manager of training and education projects.

The project's work plan has been organized in four phases. In the first phase, which concluded in February 2021, judges and practicing lawyers were selected to form the drafting team of the DJD.

In the second phase, which ended in April 2021, María José Rincón and Fabio Guzmán Ariza gave a short lexicography course to the team members to ensure that the rules of modern lexicographic technique are observed in the preparation of the dictionary. The third phase, which is now largely complete, consists of drawing up a list of all the words and expressions -lemmas y sublems in lexicographical slang - to be defined in the DJD. DJD. In the fourth and final phase, underway as of August 2021, the lemmas and sublemmas of the dictionary are being defined, a task that is estimated to take about eighteen months, at the end of which the work will be published.

The work of the editorial team is carried out in a computer application, provided by the Fundación Guzmán Ariza Pro Academia Dominicana de la Lengua, in which the slogans, their definitions, usage references and work notes are entered. DJD collaborators can access the application at any time and simultaneously, as well as directly enter their definitions, etc., which makes their work more expeditious and efficient.
